Ted McDermott - a singer known as the Songaminute Man - was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 2013. As the illness kicked in, he became violent and aggressive towards his family. As a way of calming him down from his rages, his son Simon took him on drives in the car, singing along to his old backing tracks. Simon recorded these videos and uploaded them to Facebook with a link to a fundraising page. The videos went viral around the world, raising over £150,000 for the Alzheimer's Society and leading to Ted recording his first single with Decca records. The family then received a Pride of Britain award for raising awareness of the illness.
In September 2018, the book "The Songaminute Man" as written by his son Simon was released. The book celebrates Ted's life as well as his family's account of caring for him and how he finally realised his dream at the age of 80.
