Music and Songs for Dementia Patients

We had no idea about the powerful impact music would have on our lives when caring for Dad when he was first diagnosed with dementia.

In the early days of Dad’s dementia he was incredibly violent and aggressive - he became very much a jekyll and hyde character. This was one of the main reasons why I started taking Dad out in the car.

It was a chance drive with some of Dad’s backing tracks (Dad was a singer all his life), that I noticed the change in Dad’s behaviour. When he got in the car he was aggressive and in a terrible mood, but a few hours later, he had completely changed – happy and content and singing away as though there was nothing wrong with him.

From then on every time Dad became aggressive I would get him in the car with some music and drive around for hours with him singing. And that’s how we ended up fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Society, Dad going viral around the world and then recording his Big Band Singalong Swing Albums.

The Power of Music for Dementia Patients

Music has an incredible power to reach deep within us, even when verbal communication becomes challenging. Research has found that for dementia patients, music therapy has been found to significantly improve their quality of life. Whether it's listening to their favourite songs or participating in a choir, music has a positive impact on older people with dementia, including those in care homes. Alzheimer's disease may affect memory and cognition, but music can still bring joy and create moments of connection and engagement.
